Admission from another university
Students who wish to seek admission to McMaster University’s Commerce programs from other universities will need to apply for admission through the Ontario University Application Centre at www.ouac.on.ca. Official high school and university transcripts, and TOEFL scores, if required, must be sent directly to:
Office of the Registrar
Gilmour Hall, Room 108
McMaster University
Hamilton, Ontario, L8S 4L8
Following are the requirements for admission consideration. Potential applicants who have not satisfied these requirements should not apply. It should also be noted that these requirements are the minimum for admission consideration. The number of spaces available for students applying from other universities is very limited and, in most years, the level of achievement required for admission will be higher than the minimum threshold.
In order to be considered for admission, a student must have completed, at a minimum, the following Ontario high school requirements or their equivalents.
Grade 12 and M requirements under the OSS curriculum:
- English U
- Advanced Functions and Introductory Calculus U
- One of Geometry and Discrete Mathematics U or Mathematics of Data Management U
- Completion of additional Grade 12 U or M courses to total six credits.
Students seeking admission from another university will only be considered for entry to Business I or Commerce II. Admission to either the Bachelor of Commerce program or Honours Bachelor of Commerce program beyond Commerce II is not possible.
Requirements for Admission to Business I
In addition to the high school requirements listed above, the following are required for admission consideration:
- Completion of 30 units of credit in the Fall/Winter session (September to April)
- A cumulative average (CA) of 7.0 (70%) or above
- No failed or repeated courses
- Students who have completed a year equivalent to Business I will not be considered.
Since Business I is a limited enrolment program, you will NOT be considered if you do not possess ALL the above-mentioned criteria. However, attainment of all the criteria does not guarantee transfer.
Requirements for Admission to Commerce II
In addition to the high school requirements listed above, the following are required for admission consideration:
- Completion of 30 units of credit in the Fall/Winter session (September to April)
- A cumulative average (CA) of 7.0 (70%) or above
- No failed or repeated courses
- Courses equivalent to the following must be completed within the 30 units:
- Economics 1B03 (Introductory Microeconomics) and Economics 1BB3 (Introductory Macroeconomics)
- Computer Science 1BA3 (Introduction to Computing and Computer Use for Business)
- Mathematics 1MO3 (Calculus for Business, Humanities and the Social Sciences) or Mathematics 1A03 (Calculus I)
- Students who did not complete Mathematics of Data Management U or OAC Finite Mathematics or their equivalents in high school must also have taken a course equivalent to Statistics 1L03 (Probability and Linear Algebra) at university. Students admitted to Commerce II will be expected to complete one of Anthropology 1A03, Geography 1HA3, Geography 1HB3, Health Age 1AA3, Health Age 1BB3, Political Science 1G06, Religious Studies 1B06, Psychology 1X03 or Sociology 1A06 as part of their degree requirements. Equivalent courses may be completed prior to admission.
Since Commerce II is a limited enrolment program, only a select number of spaces have been allocated for internal transfers. Thus, you will NOT be considered if you do not possess ALL the above-mentioned criteria. Attainment of all the criteria does not guarantee transfer.
Transfer Credit
Transfer credit for courses taken at other universities will only be determined following the receipt of a completed application by the Registrar’s Office at McMaster. No transcript assessment will be undertaken until all application materials, including the assessment fee, have been received.
