Firat joined the PhD program at the DeGroote School of Business in September 2013 and passed his comprehensive exam with distinction in June 2015. He defended his thesis proposal in January 2016. His main area of interest lies in inequalities in and around organizations. He is also interested in occupational health and safety issues.

Firat completed graduate-level pedagogy courses at Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching at McMaster University and earned Teaching and Learning Foundations Certificate and Teaching and Learning Scholar Certificate. He also has extensive teaching assistantship experience for undergraduate and MBA level courses including Human Resource Management and Occupation Health and Safety.

Prior to starting the program, Firat worked in contact centre, consulting and education industries in Canada and Turkey. He has worked as a teaching assistant since he started the program.
