He is a recognized researcher in the field of new product development, innovativeness and the impact of the international dimension on new products.

He has over 50 publications. His most recent book is Portfolio Management for New Products, (with R .G. Cooper and S. J. Edgett). Articles published in 1997/98 were “Portfolio management in new product development: lessons from the leaders” – Part I and Part II, Research Technology Management, “The Winning Formula”, Engineering World, and “Best practices for managing R&D portfolios, Research Technology Management. Prof. Kleinschmidt has given numerous seminars to companies in North America, Europe, Asia (China) and AustraliaNZ primarily in the area of new product development and marketing. His consulting activities (in English, German and French) have included market forecasts, new product aspects, bench marking analyses, portfolio management for new products and developing new product processes for companies. He is a member in the AMA (American Marketing Association), AIB (Academy of International Business), ASAC (Administrative Sciences Association of Canada), EMA (European Marketing Association, PDMA (Product Development Management Association)
