Although every effort is taken by the Faculty Office to ensure that Commerce midterms do not conflict, there may be a situation where you have a conflicting midterm date or time. Sometimes, Commerce midterms can also conflict with a non-Commerce course.

What to do if you have a midterm conflict:

  • Please complete a Notification of Absence Form and email it to the Student Experience Office at buscom@mcmaster.ca
  • Provide the following information via a Notification of Absence form:
    • Your full name and student number
    • Course codes (e.g. Commerce 1AA3) of both midterms
    • Please declare which midterm you wish to receive an alternate write for by indicating it on the Notification of Absence form
    • Documentation supporting the conflict (e.g. screenshot of course outline, email from professors, etc.)
  • Await approval. You will be notified via your McMaster email.

You must submit the NOA and supporting documentation ten (10) business days before your scheduled midterm if you wish to be eligible for an alternate write. Any requests received within the 10 days, on the day of, or after the originally scheduled exam will be left to the decision of the instructor for how the missed marks will be made up or reweighted.

Alternate write dates will only be provided for the follow reasons:

  • Class time conflicts with the date and time of a scheduled midterm.
  • Two midterms scheduled to take place on the same day and time.
  • Scheduled Varsity Event.
  • Scheduled medical procedure.

Unlike for final exams, McMaster has no policy regarding how many midterms a student may take in a 24-hour period. Personal obligations are not eligible for alternate write exams. If you are missing a midterm due to personal travel, or other personal events, you will need to submit an NOA form, and it will be at the discretion of the instructor how the missed marks will be made up.
