When you first began at DeGroote, I stressed that you were joining a family; and I want to reiterate what being part of the DeGroote family means.
It means that each of us, including faculty, staff and yourselves, has taken on the responsibility to work together to help transform business and society. It means that we act with integrity, with generosity in our hearts. We think big and explore new possibilities. We always give willingly and go above and beyond. More than simply completing your MBA, it is the values of DeGroote that will distinguish you from your colleagues.
You were selected to attend DeGroote because each of you had already exhibited these traits when we first met you. You demonstrated that you were going to fit into our family – that events such as Pitching In for Charity and supporting organizations like the United Way were important to demonstrate our commitment to the community and to one another. And at times, we engage with the community during our regular school days as the Ron Joyce Centre is a multi-use facility. Many of you may not know that the Region of Halton and the City of Burlington contributed $10M to this building back in 2010. We welcome our community partners who helped make this building a reality.
This is what it means to be a part of DeGroote. We are lucky to have such vibrant, spirited minds and good-hearted individuals be a part of our student-body. Sometimes, on occasion, we mess up – we act in a way that does not clearly align with our values of innovation, collaboration, generosity – and that’s ok, as long as we never lose sight who we are and who we want to be.
I want to reiterate – this is a family you belong to. We believe in, and uphold our values. I ask that each of you, in your actions, thoughts and words, maintain the integrity of DeGroote today and tomorrow.
